Overview

In general, Nikons are thought of as some of the highest quality cameras available, and the D700 is no different. This camera is in the price range and has the features that you would expect to find on a professional style camera.  It features a great ISO speed and a small, lightweight figure that makes it easy to tote around all the time. At up to eight frames per second of continuous shooting, this camera is more than capable of catching those pivotal moments in life. It also offers more versatility than most by accepting DX lenses, making it an inexpensive transition from one to the other.

Snapshots

With the Nikon Expeed image processor and the strong ISO speeds, this camera can take reliable and quality photographs in almost any setting. However, there are some downfalls, as it doesn’t seem to take action photos quite as well when you first start using it.  As a result, you should get used to the camera in a studio or landscape setting. Nevertheless, if you can master the D700 and all of the extras that you get with it, you can more than likely use it for any event and in any lighting setting that you may need.

Video

Unfortunately, as this is strictly a professional’s camera, it doesn’t have a video feature. This means that it is imperative to master the continuous shooting mode if you need to get that perfect shot, because you can’t edit out the frames you don’t need later. However, this isn’t a problem for most people, as they will generally be very happy to use this camera strictly for photographs.

Photo Quality and Extras

Even when you compare this camera to Canons in the same price range or with the same features, the D700 comes out on top almost every time. These little beasts are able to master virtually all lighting conditions, and will tackle any photo opportunity that you need it to. To top it all off, the 12.1 megapixel sensor working in conjunction with the Expeed image processor and backed with ISO speeds up to 25600 can create magically lifelike pictures, even when the camera is in the hands of an amateur.

The body is rugged, versatile and fairly lightweight, and the overall appearance of the camera makes it a very attractive buy for someone who is on a fairly limited budget. There are literally dozens and dozens of features that make this one of the most effective cameras available today. However, it is still versatile enough that it can be mastered by anyone with a passion for photography and who wants to better their skills.

Downside

Because this is a professional camera, it is obviously going to be more expensive. However, at right around $2500, it can be budgeted for by most people. The largest downfall is the lack of video with this camera. At this price, most people expect to get a great deal of functionality out of their camera, and the lack of video will likely drive a few customers away. However, even in light of this shortcoming, the other limitations of the camera seem to be acceptable for anyone who wants JUST a photographic camera.

Conclusion

Whether you’re a working professional, a freelance photographer or simply someone who enjoys being the go-to-guy for your family’s photography, this is a great camera with extensive capabilities. Considering the size, the price and the functionality of the D700, it is a wonder as to why anyone would buy anything else in the same price range.
