Whether you are just dipping your toes into the world of photography or have been snapping photos for quite awhile, most people with an interest in photography are always trying to improve their skills. Like any other hobby or pursuit, becoming a better photographer takes time. However, if you know what to focus on, it’s possible to improve your photography skills in a shorter amount of time. To help point you in the right direction, here are seven ways to shoot better photographs:
Shoot More Photographs
When most people think of shooting better photographs, the first thing that comes to their mind is being able to capture the “perfect shot.” While it’s true that great photographers seem to have a knack for capturing the perfect shot, this doesn’t mean that they just shoot one photograph and then are done. On a simple mathematical level, the more shots you take, the better the odds are that one of them is going to fall into the category of a perfect shot.
As you are trying to improve your photography skills, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to lose your inhibitions and start shooting away. Before digital cameras, shooting more photographs had a cost associated with it. However, now that digital camera memory cards can hold hundreds or thousands of photos, you can shoot away without worrying about wasting film. After you’ve finished a session, it’s easy to go review all of your photos and quickly discard the ones that didn’t make the cut.
Experiment with Multiple Perspectives
One of the keys to shooting great photographs is shooting it from the perfect perspective. However, because every situation is different, there isn’t one standard perspective that’s perfect. Instead, it’s your job as a photographer to find the perfect perspective for the situation you are shooting.
To find the perfect perspective, you need to move around as you are shooting. This means you should photograph, high and low, close and far, and from as many other angles and spots as you can find.
Don’t Be Afraid of Empty Space
Shooting a close-up of your subject can produce an excellent photograph. However, this doesn’t mean that’s the only way to shoot a great photograph. In many cases, including empty space in your photograph on purpose can produce a dramatic result that looks great.
The reason that empty space can create such an interesting photograph is because it can add more depth to your photographs, which in turn will give people more to view and experience when they look at your photos.
Try Out Different Styles of Lighting
Simply put, lighting can have a huge impact on photographs. As a result, if you want to shoot better ones, you have to try out all kinds of lighting. Although many photography novices feel intimidated by the subject of lighting, it’s actually not a daunting subject at all.
In reality, trying out different styles of lighting can be a lot of fun. It’s important to understand that while you can use your own lighting to create different effects, using natural lighting in different ways can produce just as good of results. When it comes to capturing the best lighting, the key is to keep moving and try out all kinds of different styles.
Focus on Framing
Framing is one quality that can separate an average photograph from a great one. The key to properly framing the photographs you take is to develop an eye for the surroundings of your subjects.
While just about anyone can focus a camera on a subject, it takes more skill to be able to focus on a subject and successfully frame it with its surroundings. If you start thinking about framing your shots as you are taking them, over time it will become something that you do naturally without needing to actively think about how you are framing a specific shot.
Capture Movement
In many cases, little imperfections can make a photograph more interesting. This is especially true in the case of movement. A picture of someone running may actually look better with a slight motion blur than it would if it was completely crisp and clear.
Because it can lead to so many interesting shots, don’t be afraid to capture movement. Obviously, every motion shot you take isn’t going to turn out perfectly, but there’s nothing wrong with that. Not only will capturing movement help your overall photography skills, but you will also be pleasantly surprised by the quality of some of the photos you capture.
Don’t Overlook the Little Things
When it comes to photographs, the smallest details can have the largest impact on their quality. In order to shoot the best possible pictures, photographers have to know how to catch the smallest of details in their shots.
If you want to shoot better photographs, allow yourself to become fully immersed in the moment. By relaxing and fully taking in what you are photographing, you will be able to notice and capture the little details that will have the ability to make your photographs great!
