A few days ago, the York Daily Record/York Daily News reported photographers using local cancer survivors for billboards with the intention of raising Cancer awareness among the local residents in York County. The two local photographers who initiated this project are Carol Brown and Lawrence Tyler.
Both photographers were inspired to do this project due to the fact that Cancer affected their lives. Surviving the illness, losing a loved one, and caring for a friend are just the few things that motivated them to start this project. Some may have think that it cannot happen or to their families that is why regular checkups are sometimes neglected.
The intention of these photographers is made clear as they chose familiar faces to pose for the billboards. Some might drive pass the billboards and spot someone they know. Hopefully the message that it can happen to anyone will motivate them to have regular checkups and perhaps pass the message to their loved ones as well.
Following the success of their Sunday photo shoot, four billboards under Lamar Advertising will start showing faces of Cancer survivors around York County for a month during this summer. Hopefully this awareness campaign will encourage people to help in terms of sponsoring the billboard fees. Photography has been used as a medium and hopefully it gets a positive response among the locals.
